Understanding Attachment Across Relationships

Attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, describes how early bonds with caregivers shape our expectations and behaviors in all close relationships. Research shows that attachment patterns can differ across relationship types.

The Four Attachment Styles

  • Secure: Comfortable with closeness and independence. Trusts others and feels worthy of love.
  • Anxious: Craves closeness but worries about abandonment. May seek excessive reassurance.
  • Avoidant: Values independence over closeness. May suppress emotional needs and avoid vulnerability.
  • Fearful: Wants closeness but fears rejection. A mix of anxious and avoidant tendencies.

How Parent Attachment Affects Adult Relationships

Research consistently shows that early attachment with parents — especially in the first few years — creates templates (internal working models) for how we approach relationships as adults. However, attachment is not destiny. Awareness, therapy, and healthy relationships can shift attachment patterns toward greater security.
